Schiavo protests spark debate on Florida campus

TAMPA, Fla. (U-WIRE) - Terri Schiavo's feeding tube was removed 12 days ago, but the debate about her right to live continues.

Members of the Christian organization Citytakers held an open forum in front of the University of South Florida's Cooper Hall on Tuesday afternoon to engage students in the debate. The three Citytakers who were present are also Bay Area business owners.

"Right or wrong, everyone's got a voice," said Karina Stong, a member of Citytakers. "We've heard from Hollywood. We've heard from the government. Why not hear from right here in Pinellas Park?"

"I'm not going to keep talking if people keep yelling," said Coulter, a conservative political commentator and best-selling author. "If you see someone yelling, I want the College Republicans to get up and kick them out."

Lied Center personnel and security stepped in and told the students who were yelling that they needed to leave or quietly wait until the end of the speech to ask questions.

Researchers look into missing beetle testicle

BERKELEY, Calif. (U-WIRE) - An unexpectedly large number of carabid beetle species is missing one testis even though the beetles appear to have no selective advantage relative to their two-testicle counterparts.

"Three separate instances in one beetle family suggest that there is something fundamental - but not obvious in these typical-looking beetles - that is different in these groups and apparently different than in other animals," said Kipling Will, assistant professor of insect biology at UC-Berkeley and head researcher of the study. "The evolutionary loss of one side of a pair of organs is just so rare."

Correction

Wednesday's article "Note-takers in high demand," incorrectly stated Accessibility Services has four computers with software that aids people with disabilities. Accessibility Services has four computer labs on campus that provide 20 workstations to students with disabilities. The error was made in reporting.
