Lottery Scholarship
Students who take remedial classes would not qualify for the lottery scholarship under a bill introduced last week.
Under the measure, UNM students would be unable to get the Lottery Success Scholarship for a semester in which they are enrolled in one or more remedial classes.
The bill, sponsored by Sen. Mark Boitano, is in the Senate Education Committee.

Senate Bill 545 would give $700,000 to UNM for the lab.
The Art, Research, Technology and Science Laboratory was granted $3 million, but that only covers facilities, land and major equipment purchases.
The measure, which was introduced by Sen. Shannon Robinson, is in the Senate Education Committee.
Under another bill, the University would get money to continue to participate in a national networking project.
House Bill 730, introduced by Rep. Danice Picraux, would appropriate $4 million to UNM to develop a super high-speed network for research.
The licensing fee to participate in LambdaRail, Inc., a consortium of universities and technology companies, is $5 million for five years. UNM received $1 million last year from the Legislature. Picraux's bill would cover the rest of the funding.
Continued funding of the LambdaRail project is priority six on UNM's legislative list. The bill is in the House Education Committee.
Higher Education
A bill in the state Senate would create a higher education department to regulate the colleges and universities in New Mexico.
The measure would replace the Commission on Higher Education with a cabinet-level secretary of higher education.
The bill was introduced by Sen. Cynthia Nava and is in the Senate Education Committee.
