Greeks stage fund-raiser

Sororities and fraternities put on a show Friday night to raise money for charity.

"It's so much fun, and all of the money raised goes to charity," said freshman Mahealani Luafalemana who attended Greek Sing at the SUB.

Members from fraternities and sororities participated in the show to raise money for All Faiths Receiving Home, a multiservice, nonprofit agency that serves abused and neglected children and their families in New Mexico.

Participants sang, danced and acted out humorous skits for the concert, which was just one in a series of events that took place during the annual Greek Week.

"Greeks do a lot of good on the UNM campus," said Kristen Carrillo of the Pi Beta Phi sorority. "I don't think that's always seen by members of the student body."

Carrillo said she thinks students often overlook philanthropic work done by sororities and fraternities.

Some have misconceptions about members of sororities, she said.

Greek Week enables members of fraternities and sororities to show their letters proudly by showcasing the community outreach projects they're involved with, said freshman Sharmin Dharas.

"The week is a way of getting closer to the Greek community, while also showing those who aren't a part of it what it's all about," she said.

Other events included spending time in homeless shelters and the annual Greek athletic games, which were held Saturday on Johnson Field. Participants played volleyball, dodge ball and soccer, Dharas said.

Points are earned based on the performance of each house throughout the week, and the Greek Cup is bestowed upon the winner at the annual Greek banquet.

Friday night's Greek Sing allowed members from more than 10 houses to show off their talents for a good cause.

Attendee Deidre Badoni said she would recommend the week's event to all UNM students.

"It's about more than having a good time," Badoni said. "It's about supporting the community."

Carrillo said she appreciates members of the student body who helped Pi Beta Phi reach its week's goal of $1,200.

The Real Greek Sing 2005 had three categories: the solo, the large-group and the small-group performances.

A panel of five judges, composed of students, faculty and volunteers from All Faiths Receiving Home, looked for originality and incorporation of philanthropy in each performance or skit.

One of the most well-received performances of the evening came from a member the Omega Delta Phi fraternity. Set in Mexico City, a solo singer, complete with sombrero, performed in Spanish. Members of the audience joined the performer in singing the song, which was dedicated to abused and abandoned children of New Mexico.
