Hit-and-run paintballers target Arizona students
TUCSON, Ariz. (U-WIRE) - Two students in separate incidents have reported to University of Arizona Police Departments they had been hit by paintballs while walking on campus. The Tucson Police Department also received two reports last week from residents who said two men were firing paintballs at pedestrians while driving.
University of Arizona Police Department spokesman Sgt. Eugene Mejia said the department is not taking the incidents lightly.
Paintball guns have the potential to seriously injure someone, and a person caught firing them on campus could be charged with assault with a weapon, Mejia said.

MEDFORD, Mass. (U-WIRE) - A fund set up by the Tufts Community Union Senate that would provide money for nonalcoholic social events sponsored by student groups will be put to use this semester.
The $5,000 Student Life Fund is in addition to a $3,000 fund for nonalcoholic events that has been distributed by Health Services each semester since fall 2004.
The Student Life Fund was an initiative born out of several meetings with administrators who cited an alcohol problem on campus, Tufts Community Union Senate President Dave Baumwoll said.
Creamery expands to increase cheese storage
PULLMAN, Wash. (U-WIRE) - In response to the increase in sales and production at the Washington State University Creamery, the Board of Regents approved a 6,300 square-foot cooler expansion to be built during the summer.
"We keep running out of cheese," said Russ Salvadalena, creamery manager. The creamery has saved $1 from each can of cheese sold to put toward the construction project, but the remainder of the money for the project will come from a university loan, Salvadalena said.
Construction is scheduled to begin around May, he said, and will likely be finished around December.
Washington State U. fire department to close
PULLMAN, Wash. (U-WIRE) - Washington State University, one of only 11 university campuses nationwide to operate its own fire department, no longer feels an on-campus fire department is necessary.
Aggressive building codes and renovations to older buildings reduce the chances of a major fire on campus, according to a WSU press release.
The department responded to approximately 350 fire calls per year within its 6.6 square-mile response area that includes properties on and off campus.
After 100 years of fire protection service, WSU will close the fire department on May 15, and the city of Pullman, Wash., will instead offer services to the university.

The Center will be a nonpartisan initiative that brings together UNC-Chapel Hill faculty and other national public policy experts to examine ideas for moving more Americans out of poverty and into the middle class.
