The debates are over, and the election is less than two weeks away. Democrats and Republicans are shifting focus to get voters to the polls.
On Thursday, democratic congressional candidate Richard Romero came to UNM to rally student enthusiasm for the election.
Although Romero had some negative things to say about opponent Heather Wilson, his 10-minute speech focused mainly on the importance of getting voters to the polls early.
"I hope all of you will take your civic responsibilities very seriously," Romero said. "You hear John Kerry say that this is the most important election of our lifetime. You're going to look back when you're as old as I am and say to yourself, 'That truly was a critical election for this country.'"
During the rally held at the Duck Pond, members of the College Republicans held up Wilson signs, but remained silent during Romero's speech.
"We were just showing support for our congresswoman and for our president," said Phara Forsythe, president of the College Republicans. "We always try to stay quiet and peaceful. We don't want to disrupt their event. We just want people to see the other side."

Matt Hemmendinger, president of Students for Romero, said he expected the Republicans to be at the event and was satisfied with the silent protest.
"I am glad that they didn't try and make a scene like they normally do," he said.
Wilson held a rally at the SUB on Tuesday, during which protesters in favor of medical marijuana interrupted her speech. The group was not affiliated with the College Democrats.
City Councilor Martin Heinrich and Rep. Rick Miera attended the event along with 50 others.
"I've known Senator Romero for quite some time," Miera said. "He's a very honest man, a very courageous man. I have seen him work in the Legislature. I have seen him take on issues that need to be taken on. This is the kind of person we need in Washington to talk about those issues that are important to us."
Hemmendinger said he likes Romero's chances of winning the election.
"I think we will be able to come out on top, and we will be able to win as long as we just keep working for the next two weeks," he said.
