Movie star to stump for Kerry in SUB

John Cusack to speak on education, environment

Two students thought for a minute about who he could be.

You know, he is Joan Cusack's brother, the one in "Sixteen Candles," Brandy Putt said.

Then they remembered.

Actor John Cusack is scheduled to speak to students today in the SUB Ballroom in support of Democratic presidential nominee Sen. John Kerry.

"I think it brings another angle to people who normally wouldn't be involved in the election," Putt said.

This morning, Cusack made a stop at the Corbett Center Student Union at NMSU to speak to students.

Cusack is an actor who has appeared in movies such as "Runaway Jury," "Serendipity" and "High Fidelity."

Although celebrities have been put down for endorsing presidential candidates, Chris Foley, junior at TVI, said he would listen to anything anybody has to say about Kerry.

"Anybody who's speaking out for Kerry, I support," he said.

Cusack will be in the SUB at 1:30 p.m. talking to young voters about the stakes in this year's election.

Leanne Silva said bringing in a celebrity is a blow to Kerry's credibility.

"If you bring in a celebrity to endorse a candidate, it takes away from their credibility," she said.

Chris Heinz, Kerry's stepson, visited the University on Monday to talk about college expenses, particularly tuition.

Cusack is expected to address how to make college more affordable and accessible along with protecting the environment and the creation of high-paying jobs.

The event is focused on young voters.

But some students have never heard of Cusack.

Amanda Chavez, sophomore, didn't know him until she looked him up on the Internet.

"They're just another person," she said. "It's not anybody important."

The rally is sponsored by the College Democrats and will feature a performance by the Felonious Groove Foundation.
