Sen. John Kerry took a 3-to-1 victory over President Bush in UNM's mock election, receiving 71 percent of the votes.

"I really thought there would be more of a 50-50 split," UNM mock election organizer A.J. Lapre said.

This is the first year UNM and New Mexico have participated in the mock election. UNM was one of six participating universities.

At Cornell University, the results were similar, with Kerry gaining 70 percent of the votes and Bush gaining 22 percent.

More than 6,000 students cast their votes in the Cornell mock election.

UNM polls were open through Thursday, and 419 students voted - most of them on closing day, Lapre said.

In one of the most-contested Congressional races in the country, democratic Sen. Richard Romero beat Rep. Heather Wilson by 140 votes.

Lapre said some students were upset, because they wanted to see more things on the ballot.

"I decided to go with the spirit of how this thing is supposed to be up," he said.

With the amount of political activity on campus this year, he said he expected more out of the students.

Lapre began posting fliers Tuesday for the mock election.

He said some of the reasons people gave for not voting were that they didn't have enough time and the results are public record.
