Workshop puts out students' fires

Student Services must see its fair share of angry and frustrated students.

Carol Wagner-Adams, Counseling and Therapy Services manager, said an anger management workshop was designed three years ago in response to requests from various professionals at the Student Services Center.

"They felt that students could benefit from a workshop to understand anger and how to manage it effectively," she said.

The Student Health Center is offering three free workshops for any UNM student this semester. Each workshop has two sessions. The first was held Monday, and the next will be Tuesday. Others will be held Oct. 6 and 13 and Nov. 16 and 23.

Wagner-Adams said students who attend the workshops are not signing up for mental health care.

"It's not meant to be therapy," she said.

The workshops, typically three to six people, include some curriculum and interactive activities.

"The smaller groups are nice because it encourages more interaction," Wagner-Adams said. "They can talk about their personal struggles if they choose to."

Students who successfully complete both sessions of the workshop receive a certificate of completion.

"They can use that certificate to verify that they are working on their anger issues," she said.

The courses have been successful because of the evaluations done at the end of every workshop to get student feedback , Wagner-Adams said.

"We want to meet students' needs," she said. "And if we can't do that, then there is no need to continue it."

Not everyone will have the same experience in the workshops due to different teaching methods.

"The way people teach isn't always the same," she said. "Who is in the group can make a difference too."

She said anger is not a bad emotion.

"It's just how anger is expressed that can be difficult," she said.
