Public input welcomed at regent meetings

If students have something to say to UNM's Board of Regents, today is the chance.

So what's the big deal?

The Board of Regents governs UNM. As a unit, the regents have the final say on tuition increases, appoint the University president, approve degrees and constitutions, and establish the goals of the University.

Seven regents appointed by the governor serve staggered terms of six years. The student regent serves a two-year term.

The Health Sciences Committee meets at 9 a.m. in the Research Incubator Building at 2703 Frontier Ave., in the commons area.

The Academic and Student Affairs Committee will meet at 9:30 a.m. in the SUB Lobo Room.

Fifteen minutes will be included in the agenda for a public open comment forum at the beginning of the meeting.

Regents' advisers Provost Brian Foster and Vice President for Student Affairs Eliseo Torres will give reports and comments to start off the meeting.

There is a new degree program proposal for a Master of Fine Arts in creative writing. If approved, it will replace the 10-year-old master's degree.

Updates will be given on the freshman enrollment rate, the program of research opportunities for undergraduates and strategic clusters.

All committees will convene at the Board of Regents meeting at 1 p.m. in the SUB Ballroom.

After the approval of the minutes from the last regents meeting, a public input session is available for items on the agenda.

President Louis Caldera will give an administrative report, and there will be comments from the regents before each committee reports on its individual meeting.

The regents meet the second Tuesday of every month.
