Long-term preparation necessary for job hunts

Finding a job may not be as easy as some students think.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, students who are ready to graduate but haven't begun to look for a job are behind.

It takes up to a year to find a job, according to the department.

"I haven't given it much thought," said Lara Coleman, junior biology major. "The competition is probably going to be bad. Probably when I start looking, it will open my eyes to the market."

A survey administered by UNM Career Services found most UNM graduates are employed with the University, Sandia National Laboratories, Albuquerque Public Schools or the State of New Mexico.

All students need to know are their long-term goals, said Leslye Ellison, career services director.

Setting a career goal and building on it with course work, internships and organizations are important steps to building an impressive rÇsumÇ, she said.

"Employers want people who are sure what they want," Ellison said.

In most cases, job applicants need effective communications skills, flexibility and excellent organizational and interpersonal skills.

Scott Schaffner, junior communications and journalism major, is nearing graduation. But he said he's not worried.

"I don't see any problem in finding a job after graduation," he said.

The UNM Career Services is presenting a Career Builder Workshop Series this week.
