Caldera appointee takes the helm in Nov.

President Louis Caldera filled the slot for vice president for institutional advancement and president of the UNM Foundation on Friday.

Michael Carroll left his position at Rutgers, New Jersey's state university, where he has been vice president for development and alumni relations and president of the Rutgers University Foundation for seven years. He begins work Nov. 1.

"In Mike Carroll, we have found an absolute star who can help the University increase private support in order to reach our goal of making UNM one of the most well-regarded public research universities in America," Caldera said in a news release.

Carroll's responsibilities will include leadership of UNM's general advancement, including development, alumni relations, communications, marketing, public affairs and KNME-TV.

Carroll has worked in academe for 25 years.

While at the helm of Rutgers' advancement programs, he oversaw the Creating the Future Today fund-raising campaign, which surpassed its $500 million target one year ahead of schedule.

Before Rutgers, Carroll served as associate vice president for development at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, where he supervised a university fund-raising campaign that exceeded its $250 million goal by $87 million. He also worked in advancement at the University of California-Irvine, Centenary College in Louisiana and East Carolina University.

In addition to New Mexico's aesthetics, Carroll said he was impressed by UNM and is eager to work with the Caldera administration.

"I am highly impressed by his rÇsumÇ, life experiences, plans for the University and commitment to the state of New Mexico," Carroll said of Caldera in a news release. "I am honored to be invited to join President Caldera's team, and I look forward to working with the deans, faculty and alumni to help build on the University's already impressive record of achievement in so many fields."

Carroll has received many awards, including 2004 Professional of the Year in recognition of excellence and achievement.
