President Louis Caldera created two positions to fill his communication needs.
On July 23, positions for a speechwriter and a correspondent for the president's office were listed on UNM's Web site.
Susan Carkeek, vice president of human resources, said due to the high volume of correspondence and speeches, both positions became necessary.
She said the positions are common for university presidents, but often carry different titles.
The president at the University of Texas at Austin has two speechwriters and a correspondent. NMSU's president has neither speechwriters nor correspondents. At Arizona State University, a communication manager and the public relations department aid the president with speeches.
Neither position at UNM has been filled. Carkeek said the president's office is hoping to have applicants come in for interviews by the end of the month.

The two full-time positions include benefits and require a bachelor's degree in a related field and three years experience.
The speechwriting position pays a minimum of $32,989 a year to a maximum of $57,547 per year.
Carkeek said the speechwriter will assist with press releases, articles, persuasive pieces, presentations and reports.
The correspondent position pays a minimum of $30,146 to a maximum of $52,165 per year.
Carkeek said the president's correspondent will focus on written correspondence, and added the position was more specialized than the speechwriting position, given the amount of correspondence that comes into the president's office.
