It may not be a good idea to ask instructors what their annual salary is, but the Public Information List of UNM Employees in Zimmerman Library has it if you really want to know.
The salary book at the Reserves Desk is a 146-page list with the names, job titles and annual salaries of all 7,549 UNM employees as of July 31.
According to the list, some professors work for nothing, and others cash in paychecks for more than $350,000 a year.
Sandra Velasquez, senior human resources representative, said a lot of factors are considered when determining employee salaries.
"It depends a lot on their pay grade," Velasquez said. "Experience, the particular department and that department's budget are also part of it."
UNM School of Medicine professors top the list. The highest-paid UNM employee is a professor of pediatrics and thoracic surgery who made $393,182 last year. One radiology professor made $312,058 last year, and one professor of cardiology made about $194,000.

President Louis Caldera's salary was about $270,000 last year, and Dean of Students Randy Boeglin made $81,836.
Lobo athletic coaches make more than most instructors. Rocky Long, head football coach, made $175,790 last year and led the Lobos to the Las Vegas Bowl. Don Flanagan, women's basketball head coach, made $183,600.
There are 21 different pay grades at UNM. Employees fit into a grade based on job title and duties. Depending on experience and education, the employee can start at the minimum or maximum salary in each grade.
"They will never start you below," Velasquez said. "It is always at or above minimum."
Employees in lower pay grades include some custodians, who make about $18,500 a year. Non-credit teachers make between $1,300 and $21,000 annually, while a pastry chef makes about $37,800 a year.
UNM police officers make about $30,000 annually. Some administrative assistants make about $12,605 a year, but it differs between departments.
Professors on main campus fit in the middle. Some make nothing from teaching, and others make up to $100,000. Most professors make between $20,000 and $65,000 per year.
UNM student Amanda Sandoval said instructors should be paid the same amount.
"They should all be equally paid," Sandoval said. "We are all getting an education from them, and without them we wouldn't have good careers."
Derek Sandoval said for the most part, teachers are well compensated.
"The higher-ups seem to be pretty well off, but $21,000 for a teacher who has a master's degree is not enough," he said.
