Student granted $26,000

Staff Report

UNM junior Sean Murray is one of nearly 80 students in the nation selected as a 2004 Truman Scholar.

According to a University news release, Murray is the sixth UNM student to receive the scholarship. The award is a $26,000 merit-based grant awarded to undergraduates who want financial support to attend graduate or professional school in preparation for careers in government or nonprofit organizations.

Murray is an Albuquerque native and graduated from Albuquerque Academy in 2000. He is a student in UNM's School of Engineering's Mechanical Engineering program and is co-captain and right fielder for the University's baseball team.

Murray was one of 221 scholarship finalists from 146 academic institutions.

"Twenty independent selection panels chose the recipients based upon leadership potential, intellectual ability and the likelihood of 'making a difference,'" the news release stated.

It also stated Murray went to Washington, D.C., to participate in the Washington Internships for Students of Engineering program, where he researched hydrogen fuel cell vehicles.

Congress established the Truman Scholarship Foundation as the federal memorial to former President Harry S. Truman. According to the White House Web site, Truman presented a 21-point program, proposing the expansion of Social Security, a full-employment program, a permanent Fair Employment Practices Act and public housing and slum clearance, which became known as the Fair Deal.

Murray and other 2004 Truman Scholars will receive their awards in late May at a ceremony at the Truman Library in Independence, Mo.
