Second chance for Spring Storm

Staff Report

Good news for those who haven't had time to volunteer for some community service: ASUNM's Spring Storm deadline has been extended to this Friday.

According to Saraswati Khalsa, assistant director of Community Experience, an ASUNM executive agency, the deadline has been extended because many student groups have called expressing interest in participating, but have not gotten to turn in their sign-up forms.

"We know a lot of groups are interested, and we wanted to give them the opportunity to sign up," she said. "Basically, it's a second chance."

UNM's Spring Storm is a one-day community event that started two years ago and was designed for students, faculty, staff and alumni to make a difference by volunteering all over Albuquerque.

Khalsa said student groups are the main participants and Spring Storm is a good chance for them to bond while working together. She added that the one-day factor makes it an easily accessible way to do community work.

"A lot of students don't have time to volunteer all the time," she said.

Khalsa said participants show up at University Stadium for breakfast and speakers. Then, after assigning projects, everyone disperses to work in the city and will later meet back at University Stadium for a barbecue.

She said this year Spring Storm volunteers will be working with community centers, neighborhood organizations, the Women's Community Association, the Albuquerque Shelter for the Homeless, Parks and Recreation and Albuquerque Public Schools, among others.

Those interested in signing up for Spring Storm can find group or individual sign-up sheets on the Web site at www.unm.edu/~tce. Group sign-up sheets must be turned into the Student Activities Center no later than 5 p.m.

Khalsa said the deadline will not be extended after April 2.

Spring Storm is scheduled for Saturday, April 17. For more information, call Community Experience at 277-0106 or e-mail tce@unm.edu.
