Gov. Richardson signs animal euthanasia ban

SANTA FE (AP) - Gov. Bill Richardson has signed into law a ban on a certain type of euthanasia at animal shelters.

The new law, which takes effect May 19, prohibits the use of intracardiac injections on conscious animals.

Supporters of the ban said in many animal shelters around the state, technicians have been injecting a barbiturate into the hearts of conscious dogs or cats. Sometimes they miss, leaving the animals dazed and suffering, the law's proponents said.

"It amounts to tormenting and torturing an animal, when it's done without sedating or tranquilizing the poor animal," said Senate President Pro Tem Richard Romero, D-Albuquerque, the sponsor of the legislation.

Teen kills mother after argument, hangs himself

MESCALERO, N.M. (AP) - A teenager stabbed his mother to death on an Indian reservation then fled in a stolen truck to his uncle's house 40 miles away, where he hanged himself, authorities said Tuesday.

Police said the murder-suicide followed an argument between Christian Aldava, 17, and Agnes Aldava, 47, over a handgun he had brought into their home on the Mescalero Apache Indian reservation. The mother had hidden her son's gun, officials said.

The boy had had minor run-ins with the law in the past, including involvement in a shooting last year, "but nothing that would have led anybody to think something like this would happen," Mescalero Police Chief Troy Bolen said.

The woman's body was found in the home late Sunday after police received a 911 call.
