Armed man arrested at UNM Bookstore
UNMPD arrested a man on Jan. 23 at the UNM Bookstore for unlawful possession of an illegal firearm, resisting arrest, obstructing an officer and disorderly conduct.
An officer saw John Whatley entering the bookstore with a noticeable lump under his jacket. When asked to stop, Whatley continued through the bookstore before being physically restrained.
After being handcuffed, a semi-automatic pistol, a military-style knife, extra ammunition and handcuffs were found in his possession.
According to the police report, upon being questioned Whatley made "un-American comments." The FBI was called and Whatley was questioned. The report states the FBI was aware of his activities before the arrest.
Whatley was booked into the Metropolitan Detention Center.

Flat screen monitors stolen from UNMH
Two flat screen computer monitors were reported stolen from the UNM Hospital Neuroscience Center on Jan. 20.
UNMPD was called to the center after employees noticed the monitors missing.
The report states a man and woman came into the center Jan. 19 and said they were there to replace the monitors. They left with the monitors and never returned. The department supervisor stated in the report that a third individual came in prior to the theft and told employees the monitors were to be replaced.
Three photographs were taken of the man and woman from UNMH security cameras. The suspects remain unidentified, according to the police report.
UNM police apprehend thieves; items returned
Two males were arrested Jan. 19 for residential burglary, receiving stolen goods and being in possession of burglary tools.
Vito Capobianco, director of UNM security, saw two individuals, identified as Gilbert Trujillo and Rudy Valenzuela, going through some bags near the Lomas Parking Structure, the report states. The bags contained a laptop computer, a digital camera and some books.
According to the report, Capobianco apprehended Trujillo and called UNMPD to help catch Valenzuela. Officers also found drug paraphernalia in Trujillo's possession.
Valezuela, who originally gave UNM police a false name, according to the report, also had an outstanding warrant.
Both men were booked at Bernalillo County Detention Center.
The stolen items were returned to their owners.
