Staff Report
An associate professor of Emergency Medicine from UNM will soon be playing an integral role in improving medical programs and services for the nation's pregnant women and infants.
Through his recently appointed role to the Advisory Committee on Infant Mortality of the Health Resources and Services Administration, Robert Sapien, also a pediatrics professor at UNM, will collaborate with doctors across the country to reduce infant mortality.
Tommy Thompson, secretary of Health and Human Services, appointed Sapien to a two-year term to the committee last month.
Aside from serving on numerous local, state and national health committees, he is well versed in pediatric emergency medicine and is also the state medical director for emergency services for children.
Sapien has been with the University of New Mexico since 1991.

UNM's Pediatric Emergency Department at the Health Sciences Center is a division of the Emergency Medicine Department. The Pediatric Emergency Department is dedicated to caring specifically for ill and injured children in a safe and non-threatening environment.
The doctors, nurses and technical personnel of the department have specific training in caring for acutely sick and hurt children, and are all focused on the needs of the child and their families.
Through the department, Sapien has been involved in public health advocacy and teaching in pediatric medicine for years. Along with his fellow pediatric physicians, he has been involved in expanding and improving medical services for children throughout New Mexico.
