UNM to conduct water use survey

Staff Report

When Albuquerque residents open their water bills in the coming months, they will find more than another bank-account draining statement.

The UNM Economics department has formed a partnership with the city to conduct a water users survey.

The survey is aimed at determining Albuquerque citizens' priorities and values as they relate to the use of water in the city.

"We thought that conducting this survey would be a good way to find out from the citizens what their policy preferences and priorities are," UNM Professor Kate Krause said in a University news release. "We think if residents had an opportunity to express their opinions that they might be more willing to support some type of holistic water conservation plan."

Krause and fellow professor Janie Chermak will create the survey.

UNM recently signed a resolution with the city to implement the survey.

The agreement states that the city will give a UNM graduate student a $12,000 stipend to assist in creating the survey and analyzing the data after the surveys are collected.

When all the surveys are returned and analyzed, the Economics department will send a report to Albuquerque officials.
