ASUNM Senate takes action

It was business as usual for the ASUNM Senate yesterday as senators passed eight appropriations, four presidential appointments and three bills, all by bloc votes.

The Progressive Student Alliance, UNM Handball Club, American Nuclear Society, Chi Epsilon, the Art Student Association Gallery, Alpha Phi Alpha, Aquinas Newman Community and Delta Epsilon Chi each received funding from the Senate.

Jeff Nelson Kellywood, Alexandra Bonilla, Jessica Gallegos and Amanda Sims received presidential appointments. Kellywood was appointed to the Student Publications Board; Bonilla to elections commissioner; Gallegos to elections vice chairwoman; and Sims to the Library Student Advisory Committee and Student Conduct Committee.

The three bills amended language in the executive code and legislative code of the ASUNM Lawbook.

The UNM Outreach committee also put forth plans to increase communication with the student body. Chairwoman Sen. Charlene Sevilla said the committee's efforts to reach students and educate them about the Senate's goals and various student groups at shuttles in student parking lots had been disappointing, so the committee would be refocusing its efforts.

"We are going to be working with the Southwest Film Center and outreach with students by allowing them to advertise and recruit for their organizations in a preview form before movies," Sevilla said.

She said the previews would be free and SWFC is currently drafting rules and regulations regarding formats for the previews.

Sen. Matt Burgess also addressed the Senate to give an update on the progress of the School Spirit Committee.

"We are working hard with the Steering and Rules Committee to make Red Rally concrete and ensure that it happens every year," Burgess said.
