Senate passes bill for pregame bonfire

The ASUNM Senate unanimously approved an appropriation Wednesday that could start a new tradition at UNM.

Sen. Matt Burgess said after receiving approval from the city fire marshal and Dean of Students Randy Boeglin, the Associated Students of UNM School Spirit committee got the go ahead for a bonfire before the UNM football game against New Mexico State University on Sept. 27.

"They approved a location on Johnson Field," Burgess said. "There is still a lot of planning that needs to go on."

Burgess said the bonfire will be about 10 feet by 10 feet wide and 8 feet tall.

"There will be an Aggie in the middle of the bonfire to be burnt," Burgess said. "We are really excited about this."

Senators said ASUNM has never sponsored a bonfire before.

The senate also approved a bloc of "balance forwards" totaling $49,975.

"Any student group can apply for a balance forward," Sen. Jenny French said. "They are all the money that reverts back after the fiscal year. The majority was roll over due to salaries."

Groups receiving money are: the Jenny Ames Scholarship, the ASUNM Student Court, Student Special Events, the SouthWest Film Center, the Lobbying Committee, the Homecoming Committee, the Elections Committee, the Crafts Studio, the Community Experience and the ASUNM Senate.

Also approved was a joint resolution for "Review Week," to be submitted to the Faculty Senate at its next meeting.

If passed, "Review Week" would be during the 15th week of the semester and no new material, tests, assignments or projects would be given to students during that week.
