Passport: Health Center offers many options

Staff Report

The UNM Student Health Center, located directly across from the SUB near the center of campus, offers students a wide range of health care options, insurance and counseling services.

According to its mission statement, the center provides quality health care to foster student success.

Any student enrolled at UNM can access the center's services. Student activity fees pay for part of the center's services, and rates at the center are typically lower than those of other community health care providers. Students who are enrolled in less than six credit hours pay a higher fee per visit.

Open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., the Student Health Center accepts most insurance plans and also offers the Student Insurance Plan.

The plan is geared to the needs of UNM students and provides coverage for a semester or a 12-month period. GM Southwest Inc. administers the student policy, and complete information about it can be found on the company's Web site.

Enrollment in the student plan is limited to a three-week period at the beginning of each semester. Students do not need to have health insurance to be seen at the center.

Two of the centers many services are the pharmacy and Counseling and Therapy Services, also known as CATS. UNM students, staff and faculty can get prescriptions filled from licensed practitioners at the SHC Pharmacy, in room 206 of the health center. The pharmacy has the same hours as the rest of the center, which does not open until 9 a.m. on Tuesdays.

CATS provides students with emergency care for life-threatening situations and same-day interventions for significant life crises. Prescheduled appointments are not required. Most other services at the center require appointments.

Limited parking is available behind the Student Health Center.

To reach the Student Health Center, call 277-3136; the pharmacy, call 277-6306; and to get in touch with a CATS counselor, call 277-4537.
