Human Resources gets new home

Staff Report

In an attempt to streamline services for UNM employees and job applicants, the Department of Human Resources is set to open a new "one-stop shop" at the beginning of next week.

The Human Resource Service Center, at the corner of Lomas and University Boulevards, will be a big step forward for the department, said Susan Carkeek, director of Human Resources.

"Right now, we're in seven different places," she said. "We're just so spread out. If you want to find out about benefits, you have to go to one place. If it's a document in your file, it's another place. Now people can go to one place."

Alphagraphics formerly occupied the Center's new building, which is already owned by the University.

Carkeek said that access was another factor in the need for the move.

"We get some 30,000 applications a year," she said. "Parking and navigating the campus can be pretty intimidating."

The new facility has on-site parking and will be easier for employees, applicants and retirees to get in and out of, she added.

Though some communication problems have arisen during the move-in period this week, Carkeek said about 30 of the department's 70 employees should be settled in the new space and ready to operate shortly after Labor Day.

Having all 70 employees in the same place, she said, would be ideal and that may happen sometime in the future.

"But we're not going to be greedy," Carkeek said. "This has been in the works for years. I'm just thrilled."
