Common Greek jargon defined for the masses

In 1915, Pi Kappa Alpha was the first Greek organization established at UNM.

Since then, the Greek community has expanded to include more than 600 members in 11 fraternities and sororities. As Greek life continues to flourish at the University, so does its lingo. The following terminology may be helpful to those interested in becoming part of the Greek life at UNM.

Active: a fully initiated member of a fraternity or a sorority.

Bid: an invitation for membership to a Greek organization.

Colony: a newly organized group working to become a chartered chapter of a fraternity or a sorority.

Dry: a term used to describe events where alcohol is forbidden.

Founder's Day: an event celebrated by fraternities and sororities, which highlights the founding of the organization and celebrates their histories.

Recruitment (formerly Rush): the period when potential members become acquainted with sororities and fraternities.

Good Standing: a status reached upon the fulfillment of all financial and scholastic obligations to a Greek organization.
