Mightier than the sword

Sherman Alexie reads "Lawyers' League," a short story from his new collection Ten Little Indians, to about 350 people at Madstone Theaters Tuesday night.

Alexie's stop in Albuquerque came on the heels of a two-month tour to promote the new book - his fifth - that included an appearance on the Oprah Winfrey Show.

After the reading, Alexie answered a few questions and told the audience that he subscribes to 80 magazines and is currently reading the poetry of W.H. Auden and Emily Dickinson.

Describing his journey as a writer, Alexie said, "We all start out as poets, then we get the hell beat out of us, then we return as scarred war veterans and poets all over again."

Tuesday's reading was sponsored by Bound To Be Read bookstore and Madstone.
