Woman assaulted, purse stolen in UNMH structure
UNM police responded May 22 to a report of purse snatching at the UNM Hospital parking structure.
The victim, a 69-year-old woman, told police that just as she exited her car in the structure's first level, an unknown male struck her with a "karate chop" to the left side of her neck and shoulder area, the police report states.
The woman then fell to the pavement and the male took her purse, according to the report. She declined medical treatment.

After searching the area and reviewing the surveillance tape, police could not find the stolen purse or the assailant, who the woman could only describe by his clothing, the report states.
Colorado man cited for exposure at hospital
A 44-year-old man from Aurora, Colo. was cited for indecent exposure and evading a police officer after he allegedly exposed himself near the University Hospital accounting department offices May 16.
Six witnesses told police they saw Roger Gale Avis wearing only a pair of black shorts, which he pulled down and may have even masturbated, according to witness statements.
Campus police arrested Avis and booked him into the Bernalillo County Detention Center.
Stolen vehicle towed from outside Northop
Campus police on May 21 were sent to investigate a blue vehicle with almost flat tires that had reportedly been parked on the west side of Northrop Hall for more than two weeks.
On arrival, police ran the vehicle's license plate and vehicle identification number - both of which came back as stolen, according to the police report.
The dispatch office then notified police that they had contacted the vehicle's owner, an Albuquerque woman, and that she would retrieve her vehicle, the report states.
The woman was unable to get to UNM, so the car was towed and impounded, the report states.
Loitering man turns out to be known sex offender
Two UNM police officers were sent to the west side of Woodward Hall June 4 in response to a report of a suspicious man loitering in the area.
Police arrived and made contact with 52-year-old David Saunstaire of Guthrie, Okla. Who said he was in the area waiting under a tree because he thought it might rain. Saunstaire's identification was run through a national database and officers were notified that he is a registered sex offender in Oklahoma and Arizona.
The UNMPD officers told Saunstaire that if he was going to be in New Mexico longer than 10 days he would have to register with the sheriff's department.
Police advised Saunstaire to leave the area and he did.
Man caught masturbating in hospital restroom
An Albuquerque man was cited for indecent exposure after he was reportedly caught masturbating in a University Hospital restroom May 9.
The man, 45-year-old Thomas Ahern, reportedly admitted to police that he masturbated in the restroom and he also said that after he was caught he went to a different restroom to finish.
The UNM police report states that the act was committed with the room's door open and was partially witnessed by a 12-year-old child.
Suspect nabbed for altering prescription
UNM police responded to a report of prescription drug forgery at the UNM Mental Health Center on June 5.
According to the police report, a doctor at the center had issued the suspect a prescription for 30 Ultram tablets. The amount of tablets on the prescription bottle, however, had been changed to 300, the report states.
The case has been forwarded to the detective's division of UNMPD for investigation.

Professor wins award for faculty enhancement
UNM Mechanical Engineering Professor Ken Christensen is one of 24 people who has received a 2003 Ralph E. Powe Junior Faculty Enhancement Award from Oak Ridge Associated Universities.
The award intends to help the academic and research growth of junior faculty members.
Christensen earned his bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from UNM in 1995 and received the George Breece Prize for earning the highest GPA in the 1995 School of Engineering graduating class.
Nearly 90 people applied for the award.
