A UNM history professor has been named as the recipient of an annual award honoring U.S. President Herbert Hoover and the time he spent in public office.
David Farber, who has been a professor of history at UNM since 1997, will receive the 2002 Herbert Hoover Book Award, which honors the best scholarly book published during the calendar year on any aspect of American history during 1914-64, the years of Hoover's political career.
Farber will receive the award at the Herbert Hoover Presidential Library Association's annual banquet today.
The Hoover Library Association, the organization responsible for the award, is a nonprofit support group for the Hoover Presidential Library-Museum and the National Historic Site in Iowa.
Farber's book, Sloan Rules: Alfred P. Sloan and the Triumph of General Motors was among 51 entries considered by a committee of six scholars and teachers from Iowa colleges and universities.

According to the association's Web site, entries are judged on the originality of thesis, rigor of research, clarity of thought and quality of writing.
The award consists of a bronze medallion struck by the United States Mint and a cash honorarium.
Farber is the author or editor of six books, including Chicago 68 and The Age of Great Dreams.
Sloan Rules: Alfred P. Sloan and the Triumph of General Motors will also be published in Chinese by the Democracy and Construction Publishing House in Beijing.
The UNM professor is now writing a book about the Iran Hostage Crisis of 1979-1980.
Farber has also received numerous other awards for his scholarly endeavors, including the American Historical Association Congressional Fellowship, the American Council of Learned Societies Senior Fellowship, the William J. Fulbright Senior Lectureship at the University of Indonesia and the 2002 Organization of American Historians residency in political history at Keio University in Tokyo.
