ASUNM wraps up spring semester

The ASUNM Senate passed a slew of last minute legislation Wednesday at its final meeting of the semester.

The Senate approved funding for 11 student groups for a total of $9,006 by a bloc vote of 14 appropriations.

Groups receiving funding were the College Democrats, the ASUNM Safety Promotions ad hoc committee, the Technological Commercial Organization, Beta Alpha Psi, Warhawk Booster Club, Phi Alpha Delta, Hui O Hawaii, the Association of Latino Professionals in Finance and Accounting, the Mountaineering Club, Wardroom Society and UNM Fair Trade.

Three student groups, the Kiva Club, the College Republicans and Trajectory X, failed to receive funding because representatives of their groups failed to attend Associated Students of UNM hearings to present their request.

Also passed by the Senate were amendments to the Executive Code Law Book and the appointment of Billy Velarde to the Curricula Committee. The amendment to the executive code had to be amended before passage to strike a section stating "the stipends of all senators shall be forwarded to the ASUNM Steering and Rules Committee for a huge kegger."

Although most senators were unimpressed by the joke, they were upbeat about the success they said they achieved this year.

ASUNM President Jennifer Onuska said she was proud of ASUNM's accomplishments this year.

"I have had a great time this year and it's been really great working with everybody," Onuska said. "I think the entire Senate inspires each other."

Vice President Heather Gabel, who was attending her final senate meeting after four years of service, was emotional but said the learning experiences and the relationships she has formed will carry with her throughout her life.

Six senators also said goodbye, as Ashlynne Padilla, Donna Conrad, Tio Vega, Andrea Brigman, Lorenzo Garcia and Jonathon Maple each ended their terms.

Sen. Garcia said he was amazed at the way ASUNM, particularly Onuska and Gabel, performed.

"I cannot think of two people who have done better jobs in their positions," Garcia said.
