The UNM men's mile relay team nearly shocked Louisiana State University at the LSU Alumni Gold meet in Baton Rouge, La., Saturday.
The mile team of Matt Bishop, Chris Garofola, David Lloyd and Nick Lott shattered their previous best time by nearly two seconds at 3:10.63. The Lobos finished second in the race just .03 seconds behind LSU.
Long distance runner Matt Gonzales continued his brilliant season by winning the 1,500m with a time of 3:48.63. Junior Sean Flaherty finished third and sophomore Cameron Clarke took fourth.
On the women's side, Amanda Barnes continued to sparkle taking second place in the shot put with a UNM-record throw of 48-01.25. Meanwhile, sophomores Veronica Gonzales and Amber Nolte each finished second in the javelin and pole vault.
Distance runners Amanda Swann and Sarah Gonzales also fared well. Gonzales was runner-up in the 5,000 with a season-best time of 17:51.63. Swann led the way for the Lobos in the 1,500 finishing in 4:44.04.

In the men's field events, junior Jason Barkermeyer tossed a career-best throw of 160-08 for fourth in the discuss.
The track team is back in action next weekend when it travels to Walnut, Calif., for the Mount San Antonio College relays.
