Tennis takes 2nd in conference

A 4-3 win over the Air Force Falcons gave the UNM men's tennis team a second-place finish in the Mountain West Conference by virtue of a tie-breaker Sunday.

The Lobos finished 4-1 in the MWC, which tied them with San Diego State and Brigham Young universities. BYU won the title after handing UNM its only conference loss of the season Saturday. UNM held the tie-breaker over SDSU.

On Sunday, UNM swept the doubles matches to take an early 1-0 lead.

At No. 1, Brent Salazar and Ryan Stotland gave Eric Pittman and Tyler McClung their first conference loss of the season 8-6. The No. 2 doubles match saw Bart Scott and Jasmin Hodzic easily defeat Shannon Buck and Trevor Johnson 8-2, while Divan Coetzee and David Kowalski downed Chris Dong and Martin Black 8-4 at No. 3.

The singles matches proved to be tighter as the Lobos and Falcons split 3-3.

Buck won the top singles match 6-1, 3-6, 6-4 over Scott in a hard-fought match. At the No. 2 position, Coetzee outgunned Pittman 7-5, 6-1. Kowalski took the No. 3 match with a tight 7-6, 7-6 victory. Salazar's 6-3, 6-4 win over Dong at No. 4 ensured the Lobos' victory. At the No. 5 and 6 spots, Johnson and Black earned victories over UNM's Henry Gers and Hodzic 4-6, 7-6 (10-8) and 6-4, 6-3, respectively.

Next up for the Lobos is the MWC tournament April 24 in Provo, Utah.
