A UNM alumnus who started his own successful business consulting famous NFL coaches and players advised UNM students Monday how to create a successful career.

Todd Greene, who is the founder of the Todd Greene Agency, an international sports speaker's bureau and graduate of the Communication and Journalism Department, gave advice and fielded questions regarding careers in communications and business during a conference call in one of the department's Business and Professional Speaking class Monday.

Una E. Medina, the course's instructor, said communications majors can do many different things with their degrees.

"Communications majors are not always clear about what they want to do, that's why I brought Todd in to describe just one of the many avenues that can be pursued with a communications degree," Medina said.

Greene, who described his job as a communication major's dream job, consults NFL players, coaches, NASCAR organizations, Olympic athletes and sport agents on public speaking, product endorsement and corporate seminars.

Greene wants his advice to help communications seniors gain confidence in creating their dream jobs in marketing, advertising and brand management.

"Don't get discouraged by failure or being turned down," Greene said.

Among the things that Greene advised students to do were to immerse themselves in their career, read as much as possible about their field of interest and work hard.

Green also said personal policies he uses for his own business that would be helpful for students wanting to start their own businesses are to return phone calls immediately, to educate and listen carefully to prospective clients and be honest.

"It is always nice to hear the strategies of someone who is well educated and successful and how they used those strategies in their business and community," said Chris Hammock, a communication major.
