Attempted theft reported

at College of Fine Arts

Campus police were sent to the College of Fine Arts March 18 after an employee alerted them to an attempted break-in.

The employee told police that an unknown person tried to break into a large file cabinet to steal toner and computer accessories.

According to the UNM police report, the unknown person used either a crowbar or a screwdriver to pry open the cabinet's two doors. Damage to the cabinet and its doors, which were bent back, was estimated at $100. Nothing was reported missing in the attempted theft.

Police have no suspects in the case.

Trigger for bookstore's

fire alarm undetermined

University police were sent to the UNM Bookstore at 3 a.m. March 20 after one of the building's fire alarms activated. The responding officer searched the building and reportedly found nothing until he reached the bookstore's warehouse. There, he smelled an odor similar to burning rubber or paper. The officer alerted the Albuquerque Fire Department but after fire fighters arrived, they reportedly could not smell anything of concern. Firefighters searched the rest of the warehouse and building but could not find anything.
