Miss Indian UNM 2003-04

Moments after winning the 2003-04 Miss Indian UNM pageant at Hokona Hall Wednesday night, Jerelene Yazzie receives congratulations from Deidre Sanders of Durango, Colo.

Yazzie, 26, is a senior in the Anderson Schools of Management planning to pursue a master's degree in finance next fall. She said the Miss Indian UNM crown will give her a chance to help recruit American Indian students into UNM.

"It doesn't take a crown for you to know your identity," Yazzie said. "Winning this award shows you can get an education while maintaining your cultural identity."

Francis Montoya, a DJ at KUNM and the pageant's master of ceremonies, said Yazzie will represent UNM and the entire American Indian population in a variety of capacities on and off campus in the coming year.

"Her first initiative will probably be the Gathering of Tribes this weekend at The Pit," added Rebekah Horsechief, Miss Indian UNM 1997-98.
