The UNM baseball team added another highlight to its stellar season with an 11-7 win over 7th-ranked Arizona State University Wednesday in Tempe, Ariz.
UNM's hitters started the game hot, pummeling ASU starter Beau Vaughan for four runs in the first inning and a total of nine runs through the first four. The Lobos never gave up their early lead, allowing the Sun Devils to get as close as 9-7 before adding two more runs in the ninth to produce the final score.
Lobo pitcher Adrian Soto (3-0) earned the win with 2.2 innings of strong relief. Soto yielded only two hits to the 13 batters he faced.
As has been the trend of late, key Lobo players stepped up and produced at the plate. Designated hitter Joe Salas was 2-5 with three RBIs and first baseman Chris Alexander went 2-3 from the plate with three RBIs and two runs scored.
Senior shortstop Dusty Young was 1-4, extending his hitting streak to 31 games, the second longest such streak in the program's history.

With the victory over the perceived college baseball powerhouse, the Lobos improved their overall record to 23-10. UNM has won 16 of its last 20 games. With the loss, ASU's record fell to 34-7.
The Lobos look to continue their fine play in an important three-game series this weekend with UNLV in Las Vegas, Nev. Both squads go into the series with identical 7-2 MWC records, good enough for a share of the lead in the conference.
