COLUMN: Residence hall parking to be used by hospital

by Jennifer Onuska

ASUNM President

This brief column is to inform students about an up-coming situation that will affect many students.

The parking structure on campus near the residence halls will soon be UNM Hospital Parking only. That's right, the hospital will be taking over the parking structure to build a pavilion.

However, there will be two new structures built to suffice the parking we will be losing. The question is, where will they go? It is important to keep one of them close to the residence halls so those students will not lose their parking.

In addition, UNM has assured students that the hospital will not obtain full use of the current parking structure until the two new ones are built. Therefore, at no point will any students currently using the structure be out of parking. And, no parking pass increases will be attributed to this transition.

On Wednesday, April 9, ASUNM will sponsor a parking structure forum in the Kiva Lecture Hall at 5 p.m. At this point, Dupuy Bateman, the associate vice president of Auxiliary Affairs, and Roger Lujan, director of Facility Planning, will be there to answer questions, address concerns, explain the history of this situation, and talk about the future locations of the parking structures.

ASUNM fought to get two students on the committee that will decide where the new parking structures will be located. If this is an issue that you would like to get involved with and make sure the student voice is heard, then it is important that you apply. Applications can be picked up at the ASUNM office.

Applicants must submit their applications into the ASUNM office by Friday, April 18.

If this issue affects you, please attend the forum to become educated about the situation and express your voice to the administration.
