ASUNM Profiles: Matt Hanson

ASUNM senatorial candidate Matt Hanson, who is running as a member of the Vision slate, said that if elected, he would like to push for faculty evaluation forms that would be accessible to students.

"I think it would make the faculty more responsible if they knew students could look up an evaluation, filled out by other students, and decide whether or not they want to take the class," he said.

Hanson, a junior majoring in psychology and minoring in chemistry, said he has a different vision of student life because he has lived on and off campus.

"I am also here on scholarship," Hanson, a Colorado Springs, Colo. native said. "So I know what it's like to be paying for school."

As a non-traditional school, UNM sometimes lacks a "community or college-feeling environment," Hanson said.

"I think students would definitely like to see that change," he said. "Bringing more bands on campus to play down by the Duck Pond and bringing more organizations to present on campus would help."

Safety is another major concern for students, Hanson said, and some students are still afraid to walk on campus at night and on the weekends. He added that more specific safety guidelines, other than "just make sure you walk in groups," should be a priority.

Hanson said visibility would be the best way to generate University-wide interest in Associated Students of UNM.

"Just being out there and being able to answer people's questions are the keys to helping people understand what ASUNM is," he said.

Participating on the University baseball team, Hanson said, is among his best accomplishments at UNM.

Hanson correctly named regents Andrea Cook, James Koch and Donald Salazar, who died March 28; student organizations Psi Chi and the Biomedical Engineering Society; and President Chris Garcia. He could not name a third student organization or Provost Brian Foster.
