ASUNM Profiles: Keith Lopez

Junior Keith Lopez said he is running for ASUNM senate because he has a lot of pride in UNM and he wants to provide a voice for all students.

"Campus-wide involvement with ASUNM is very important," Lopez said. "As a senator, being a familiar face, saying, 'hey, I'm here, this is what your senate does,' that is how it's supposed to work."

If elected to the Senate, Lopez said he will bring fresh ideas and positive energy to the Associated Students of UNM.

"I'm a people person," he said. "I'm very motivated and energetic and I think those will be good qualities to bring to the Senate."

A good line of communication between students and student government, Lopez added, is vital to a good working relationship within the University community.

Lopez listed his position as an orientation leader as one of his biggest accomplishments at UNM. He is currently a resident assistant at Hokona Hall, where he also was a desk attendant.

"Getting involved in residence life has definitely enhanced my college experience," he said. "It has also helped me to do better in school in terms of grades."

Campus safety is one issue at the top of many students' priority list, Lopez said. Another concern, he added, is that many students are not aware of the day-to-day happenings on campus.

"Most students don't know what's going on, or how to let their voices be heard," Lopez said.

Originally from Santa Fe, Lopez is majoring in secondary education with a concentration in communication arts.

He correctly named AFRICA, the Residence Hall Association and the Baha'i Association of UNM as student organizations; Andrea Cook, James Koch and John "Mel" Eaves as regents; Brian Foster as provost and Chris Garcia as president.
