ASUNM passes 2003-04 budget

The ASUNM Senate unanimously passed its budget for the 2003-04 fiscal year Wednesday with $310,404 out of $485,747 going back to funding for the Associated Students of UNM.

The ASUNM student agencies — Community Experience, the Crafts Studio, the Elections Commission, the Homecoming Committee, the South West Film Center and Student Special Events — accounted for most of the $310,404.

Other groups receiving large funding amounts were Scribendi with $11,500, Ice Wolves Hockey with $10,212, Alpha Delta Epsilon with $8,158, SEPAS with $6,094 and Lobo Rugby with $5,873.

Finance committee Chairwoman Sen. Amanda Sims said the passing of the budget was the culmination of a large amount of hard work and countless extra hours.

“I think the Senate knows how hard the Finance committee works and after three weekends of hearings we have a really good idea to make fair and accurate recommendations,” Sims said.

She added that the committee did its best to make sure all groups represented received the most money available.

“I hope the groups know we have a limited amount of money but we feel that we’re fair across the board and that students will definitely prosper and do well with the money that we’ve given them,” Sims said.

The Senate also dealt with its largest load of legislation this semester. It passed four appropriation bills funding four student groups: the triathlon team, the Student Respite Alliance, SOLAS and the Capoeira club.

Nine bills relating to language in the ASUNM Lawbook were also passed with one, dealing with appointments to the ASUNM Lobbying Committee, being tabled and sent back to the Steering and Rules Committee. A joint resolution was also passed supporting proposed changes to the absence policy in the UNM Pathfinder.

Additionally, eight presidential appointments were ratified by the Senate — Alicia Collins and Alexander Hughes as associate justices, M. Nicole Griego as Student Special Events speakers director and Efu Awich, Daniel Trujillo, Amy Weber, Matthew Stensland and Amanda Martinez as elections’ commissioner.

Sens. Jonathon Maple and Sims were also nominated for ASUNM Senator of the Year.
