Sophomore Michelle Heidbrink is running for re-election to the ASUNM Senate because she said she brings a unique viewpoint to the students.
"I'm an out-of-state student so I have a little bit different perspective," said Heidbrink, who is running with the Horizon slate. "I am also a student-athlete, so that gives me a different perspective also."
Heidbrink, a member of UNM's 50th-ranked women's tennis team, is also on the Athletic Council, the ASUNM Steering and Rules Committee and the ad hoc Recycling Committee. She said her experience with these groups give her insight into the needs of students.
"I'd like to expand on the communication with the students we represent," Heidbrink said. "One of our slate's goals is a mid-semester 'tell-all' for people who have no idea about ASUNM and how it works for students. It would be for people to learn more and get involved."
Heidbrink said she believes students' biggest concerns are tuition and involvement in University activities.
"Tuition increases are a huge concern," she said. "I'd like for students to be more aware of the tuition forums and how by lobbying, we can keep tuition down. I'd also like to see UNM become a more traditional campus and get students more involved with programs that ASUNM puts on."

Heidbrink added that ASUNM has done well this year with reaching out to students through tabling and weekly columns printed in the Daily Lobo.
"We need to continue that communication and expand on it," she said. "Students should know about the activities ASUNM sponsors."
Heidbrink is double majoring in political science and philosophy. She said she plans to go to law school and become involved in politics after graduation.
Heidbrink correctly identified Andrea Cook, Jack Fortner and Larry Willard as regents; SEPAS, the Student Athletic Advisory Council and Golden Key as student groups; Brian Foster as provost and Chris Garcia as president.
