ASUNM senatorial candidate David Newland said he is looking for more participation among UNM students and that he hopes to see a love for the school that exists in other places.
"I see apathy with a lot of people around here," Newland said. "I went to school at Michigan State for a while and the students there were just really involved. I want to see more school spirit at UNM."
Newland said he would like to see more student interest in the upcoming appointment of UNM's new president. He added that campus-wide participation and "getting some new blood in" would benefit the Associated Students of UNM.
A junior majoring in operations management at the Anderson Schools of Management, Newland is running on the Vision slate. He said safety is one of students' biggest concerns on campus.
"It's always been in the back of people's minds that we could be a little safer," Newland said.
Another issue on students minds is parking, Newland said.

"We have a lot of RA's who are close to that vein," he said. "It's definitely a hassle for a lot of students."
Newland said he is personable and a good listener - two qualities he thinks will play well in the ASUNM Senate.
"I'm all for getting involved as much as I can," he said. "I'm into pressing the flesh and just smiling. That's my lot."
Newland, who works 30 hours per week at a local law firm in addition to his class load, said learning to take a step back and have fun have been his most significant accomplishments as an undergraduate.
He correctly named Delta Sigma Pi, the Residence Hall Association and AITP as student organizations; Chris Garcia as president; Brian Foster as provost and Andrea Cook and James Koch as regents. He could not name a third regent.
