ASUNM: Carlos Guillen

Carlos Guillen, who is running for ASUNM Senate on the Horizon slate, said he wants to establish a series of mid-semester "tell-alls," where students and other campus organizations can voice their concerns to the student government.

"I formed that goal for our slate," Guillen said. "Networking is very important. The 'tell-alls' would give different members of the UNM community a chance to come and say, 'I never see you doing anything' and then get an immediate response."

Guillen, a junior majoring in communication and minoring in political science, added that he would like to form an ad hoc committee whose goal would be to create a forum where all campus groups could ask questions and get ideas to make their organizations stronger.

The Spring 2003 elections will be Guillen's first time running for an Associated Students of UNM office, he said, but he is familiar with the organization's ins and outs. Guillen has worked the last year as an aide under ASUNM Vice President Heather Gabel.

Guillen said his current post has put him in a position where he can see how the Senate works from behind the scenes, giving him an advantage as a prospective senator.

"I can look at different goals and see what's attainable," he said. "I can say, 'This can't be done,' and really be sure that it can't."

Guillen listed the parking situation and campus-wide communication with ASUNM as two major concerns for students. He added that the proposed 'tell-alls' would help rectify both deficiencies.

By joining groups such as the Trailblazers and the Aquinas Newman Committee, Guillen has become more involved during his three years at UNM, which, he said, is his most significant accomplishment so far as a student.

Guillen correctly named James Koch, Larry Willard and Andrea Cook as regents; Crochet Conmigo, Delta Epsilon Xi and the Residence Hall Association as student organizations; Brian Foster as provost and Chris Garcia as president.
