Writer to share her magical realism

Staff Report

The UNM 21st Century Speakers Series will get a dose of magical realism with an appearance by acclaimed Latin American author Isabel Allende Wednesday night at Popejoy Hall.

With several novels to her credit, Allende is one of the foremost figures in the Latin American feminist literary awakening. Her poignant, aggressive style addresses the social, the historical and, perhaps most importantly, the political.

Allende's books are written in Spanish and often focus on the experience of women. She has pushed the boundaries of the magical realism movement, pioneered by Gabriel Garcia Marquez and Paolo Coehlo, with her blend of political reality and surrealistic undertones.

UNM English majors might be familiar with La Casa de los esp°ritus (The House of Spirits), or the short story "The Judge's Wife," two of Allende's most noteworthy works.

She describes her writing process, in part, thusly:

"You are not the boss; life is the boss. So when you accept as a writer that fiction is lying, then you become free; you can do anything."

Allende is set to speak at 7:30 p.m. on March 26 in Popejoy Hall. Tickets are still on sale, for $25, $20 and $15. UNM students and staff get a $5 discount with a valid ID. Tickets can be purchased at UNM Ticket Offices, Raley's Supermarkets, Western Warehouse stores and online at tickets.com
