University announces 5 presidential candidates

The University's Board of Regents announced Friday a list of five candidates that the 18th president of UNM will be chosen from by the end of the semester.

The announcement comes five months after regents formed an 11-member search committee to examine applications and interview candidates from a pool larger than 100.

"It is a very balanced group of candidates," said Reg. James Koch.

In a brief special meeting, the board unanimously approved the selection of the five finalists for the top UNM administrator position.

The candidates are:

Caldera is also the president of the CSU Foundation. He also worked as the secretary of the Army under President Clinton from 1998-2001.

"This is a very exciting time for the University," said Reg. Larry Willard, president of the board.

Willard told the regents that the finalists are being invited to visit campus during the next three weeks to meet with students, staff, faculty and administrators. Koch said no definite time frame for the candidates' campus visits has been established, but each should be visiting for one to two days.

Koch added that it will be important for the next president to exhibit excitement and a new vision for the University as well as have the ability to work with the State Legislature.

According to law, the board may not select a new president until at least 21 days after the announcement of the five finalists, making the announcement of a finalist coming some time after April 11.
