The UNM women’s tennis team notched a victory over Brigham Young University 4-3 Saturday for only the second time in school history.
The Lobos won the doubles point with Maja Kovacek and Sandy Lukowski downing Liza Klempner and Dominique Reynolds 9-7. The Cougars’ team of Hadley Macfarlane and Tara Porter won at the No. 2 spot over Maria Ruiz-Fabrega and Rachel Hatley 8-5. Tiffany Robertson and Michelle Heidbrink secured the doubles point, defeating Rebecca Pike and Olga Bulytcheva 9-8.
Kovacek, Lukowski and Robertson earned victories in singles to clinch the win. Kovacek dropped Klempner 6-4, 6-3. Lukowski won a close match at the No. 2 spot 7-5, 6-4 over Reynolds. Robertson rounded out the Lobo win with a 6-3, 6-2 pounding of Porter.
Men’s Tennis
The Lobo men upset No. 34 San Diego State University 4-3 Saturday in San Diego.
Divan Coetzee earned a key three-set victory at the No. 2 singles spot to clinch the victory. Coetzee dropped the first set 4-6 to Ryan Redondo before rebounding to win the next two sets 6-2, 6-3.

David Kowalski also picked up a singles victory at the No. 4 spot with a win over Daniel Jung 6-4, 6-4. Henry Gers defeated the Aztecs’ Gabe Coren at the No. 6 position by injury default for the Lobos’ final singles win.
UNM wrapped up the doubles point with wins from No. 1 team Ryan Stotland and Brent Salazar and the No. 2 team of Jasmin Hodzic and Bart Scott.
