Staff Report
Just five of 15 teams finished under-par at the Toyota Las Vegas Intercollegiate golf tournament last weekend; UNM was not one of them.
The Lobos finished the event in 13th place, with a three-day total of 879; 15 shots over-par and a distant 23 shots behind winner Oklahoma State University. The 12th-ranked Sooners fired an 8-under 856, one stroke better than tournament host No. 5 UNLV and two better than No. 7 Texas and top-ranked Clemson. North Carolina State finished fifth at 861.
With rounds of 71-72-72 -- 215, junior Ian Medlock was the lone Lobo to finish under-par. Medlock's one-under total earned him a tie for 17th. He was one of only 21 players in the 78-man field to finish in red figures.
The around-par finish was Medlock's third such performance in as many tries this spring. He led the Lobos in birdies at the Toyota with 11, but eight bogeys and a double-bogey kept him from seriously threatening for the individual title.
That honor went to UNLV's Ryan Moore, who shot Sunday's low round at Southern Highlands Golf Club, a 5-under 67, for a stirring, come-from-behind victory. Moore's 8-under total of 208 proved one too good for Lars Brovold of Georgia, TCU's Adam Rubinson, Justin Walters of North Carolina State and Clemson star D.J. Trahan.

UNM senior Michael Letzig fired rounds of 73-70-77 -- 220 to finish at 4-over-par, in a tie for 34th. Through 13 holes in Saturday's second round, Letzig was 5-under for the day, 4-under in all and just four shots off the pace. But a bogey at 17, followed by a double-bogey at the last hole proved too much for him to overcome.
Coming off an illness, Lobo freshman Jay Choi's weekend was marked by inconsistency. In the three-day tournament, Choi made an eagle, 10 birdies, 10 bogeys and three "dreaded others," en route to a tie for 39th. He shot rounds of 75-72-74 -- 221, to finish at 5-over-par.
UNM sophomores Madalitso Muthiya and David Schultz walked away from the event with ties for 57th and 70th, respectively. Muthiya fired 74-73-77 -- 224, while Schultz had rounds of 79-76-76 -- 231.
Competing as an individual, Lobo junior Jim Anderson shot a three-day total of 236, 20-over-par. He finished tied for 76th.
Next up for the Lobos is the Morris Williams Intercollegiate, in Austin, Texas, March 17-18.
