LETTER: War effort garners approval, support

Editor,

People around the world continue to question the war in Iraq.

Those for and against the war have made sensible, credible arguments supporting their causes. Some of the strongest arguments that come to mind against the war are: inspections would have worked if given enough time, the costs of the war are tremendous, we shouldn't be risking the lives of others for oil and money. Lastly, people against the war admit that Saddam Hussein does not have any credibility, yet insist we should have worked harder to resolve any problems through peaceful means. They consider war a last resort.

While the views of the people against the war may be sensible, they are not based on concrete facts. Reasons for the current invasion of Iraq go back as far as 12 years. People for the war on Iraq justify the attack by pointing out that: Hussein is a proven threat to international security, alternatives to invasion would not have solved the problem, removing Hussein will be consistent with the goals of the war on terrorism, the Iraqi people will support this action, a democratic Iraqi government will help with the Middle East peace process and if Hussein develops weapons of mass destruction, he could give them to terrorist organizations.

Secretary of State Colin Powell correctly said that, "The war is not about oil." After the war, the oil will not belong to or be used by the United States. The oil will belong to the Iraqi people and will be used to aid financially in rebuilding a democratic nation.

We support President Bush and the U.S. government in their fight against terrorism and Saddam Hussein. Part of their duties as elected officials is to protect our nation. In the same manner, we support our troops, who make great sacrifices in order to defend our rights to "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness" as stated in the Declaration of Independence. We conclude with the following quote, "This war is justified by our own laws, by international laws and by the laws of nature, which state all people are created equal and with the right to live in liberty," from Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist of Tennessee.
