LETTER: U.S. does not have sole claim to world

Editor,

The following is a copy of what I sent to New Mexico congressional officials Wednesday, March 12.

New Mexico Congressional Officials:

I would like to express my disgust to you regarding the recent official name change of french fries and French toast to "freedom" fries and "freedom" toast, in three federal House office buildings, spearheaded by two Republican lawmakers.

There exists a prevailing notion among conservative circles that to not be in favor of war is somehow anti-American and unpatriotic. These individual who believe as such need to clearly have a reality check and remove the blindfolds.

How dare that suggestion even enter public discourse!

This concept extends into the international arena as well. Are we to think that because countries other than the United States want to continue along avenues other than war that they are not against terrorism? Absolutely not. The ends do not always justify the means.

And to say that France is now our "so-called" friend -- implying that perhaps it is not, as well as displacing the word "French" for "freedom," as though freedom should necessarily imply a support for war, is unbelievably mind-boggling.

Additionally revolting and perplexing is legislation introduced by Rep. Jim Saxton, R-New Jersey, in the House that would block any French company from receiving U.S. government aid or financing in any reconstruction of Iraq. Another measure discourages American tourists, businesses and the government from participating in the 2003 Paris Air show.

Is this really happening in America? This is utterly disgusting to the point that I am embarrassed that elected officials that represent me, as an American (the public), would profess such ludicrous opinions, and further tarnish the reputation of this country since the Bush administration has taken office.

The fact needs to be faced that the United States is not a sole proprietorship in existence on this planet. If we are to survive as a nation, then we need to be able to exist within the conforms of the rest of the world. We may certainly assist in forming and guiding this development, but not in presiding over all decisions, ready to sign in to action that which we deem suits our personal interests alone.

I ask that you address these issues with the above congressional officials who have been involved in bringing forth such unbecoming legislation and philosophies, and tactfully express your distaste for such conduct.

Thank you for your time.
