Staff Editorial

Oklahoma Daily (U. Oklahoma)

(U-WIRE) NORMAN, Okla. - What do you know about the Domestic Enhancement and Security Act? This proposed legislation, nicknamed Patriot Act Two, would give more power to federal officials in the war against terror.

Unfortunately, many people are unaware of the details of Patriot Act Two. We believe Americans should take the time to research this potential legislation, and then voice their opinions.

The original Patriot Act gave the government more power in apprehending terrorists. It was passed by congress less than six weeks after Sept. 11, with little opposition. Little has been said about Patriot Act Two, even though it contains legislation that some believe interferes with people's civil liberties.

Patriot Act Two would give the government more power in wiretapping phones, detaining suspected terrorists and stripping Americans of their citizenship.

The act would also amend the Freedom of Information Act so the public could not obtain information about certain detainees. Some see this additional power as a necessary tool for the government to protect Americans against terrorism. Others believe it threatens the rights of innocent civilians.

Whether or not Patriot Act Two would actually infringe upon certain individuals' civil liberties is certainly debatable. Therefore, everyone should take the time to find out about this controversial bill. Learn about the Domestic Enhancement and Security Act, and then voice your concerns to your congressmen.
