Reg. Larry Willard said that the presidential search committee is continuing to narrow down its list of candidates for the next president of the University.
The committee met Thursday in a nearly three-hour long closed session and Willard said that there are still about 80 candidates.
"At this point we still have a big pool that we're working on," Willard said.
Willard has been acting as chairman of the committee since former Reg. David Archuleta stepped down as the committee chairman late last month. Archuleta resigned because his term as a regent ended and he said he felt that a current member should serve on the committee in his place.
Willard said that the UNM Board of Regents will address the issue of appointing a new chairman for the search committee in its scheduled meeting Feb. 18. He added that an announcement regarding finalists for the position should be coming soon.

"I'd say we're probably shooting for March as far as having the finalists on campus," Willard said.
