Former UNM Board of Regents member David Archuleta resigned Friday as chairman of the Presidential Search Committee.
Archuleta said that because he was no longer a member of the board -- his term expired in January -- he would step down as search chairman to allow a current member of the regents to head the committee.
"My resignation will make it possible for one of the members of the current board to serve on the search committee," Archuleta said in a University press release. "They're the ones who have to meet and evaluate the presidential candidates and it's important that they're comfortable with them."
He added that he believed his resignation was in the best interest of the presidential search. Archuleta said his resignation should not affect the search or lengthen the process of finding a new president for the University.
Regents President Larry Willard said an appointment of a new search committee chairperson would be forthcoming. He added that Archuleta's resignation would not disrupt the timetable for the new presidential appointment. Willard thanked Archuleta for his dedication to UNM as a regent.

"He was a big asset during his tenure at the University and he will be missed," Willard said.
Archuleta began his term on the UNM Board of Regents six years ago.
